Model UN Conferences in Texas & the South

The South’s Model UN map is really two circuits. Texas runs on HAMUN in Houston, the oldest high school conference in the Southwest, plus UT Austin’s CTMUN and Rice’s campus conference. The Southeast stretches from Georgia Tech’s fall conference in Atlanta through the Carolinas’ university conferences at Duke and UNC to a dense Florida season anchored by GatorMUN and FHSMUN.

Florida deserves special mention for depth: between GatorMUN, KnightMUN, FIMUN, FHSMUN, and the year-round Foundations for Leadership conferences, a Florida delegate can compete nearly every month without crossing state lines.

Common questions

What is the biggest Model UN conference in Texas?

HAMUN in Houston, with more than 1,000 delegates each February. It is also the oldest high school conference in the southwestern US. CTMUN at UT Austin is the other fixed point on the Texas calendar, with a fall conference plus a spring all-crisis day.

Which Southern conferences are strongest for crisis delegates?

VUMUN at Vanderbilt is the standout: all sixteen of its committees are crisis, which is rare anywhere in the country. CTMUN’s spring conference in Austin is also crisis-only, and GatorMUN and DUMUNC both carry strong crisis slates alongside their GAs.

Are there middle school Model UN options in the South?

Florida is the best served: Foundations for Leadership runs conferences and classroom programs for middle schoolers in Miami-Dade and Pinellas County. Elsewhere, middle school participation mostly happens through school-hosted invitationals rather than standing conferences.

Preparing for one of these conferences?

Start with the two-week first-conference prep plan, print the first-conference checklist, and draft your paper with the position paper template. The guide to how awards actually work explains what chairs score once you get there.
