Model UN Conferences in Asia & the Pacific

Asia runs several distinct Model UN worlds at once. The international-school circuit follows THIMUN procedure through THIMUN Singapore, BEIMUN in Beijing, and SEOMUN in Seoul. India has built the largest youth circuit anywhere, from Harvard’s own HMUN India to IIMUN’s chapter events across hundreds of cities, alongside storied school-hosted conferences in Mumbai and Dehradun.

Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan each anchor their own national circuits, and Australia takes a different path entirely: UN Youth Australia runs the Evatt Competition, a Security Council simulation for school teams, alongside a residential national conference each July.

Common questions

Which Asian conferences use THIMUN procedure?

THIMUN Singapore, BEIMUN in Beijing, and SEOMUN in Seoul all run THIMUN-style consensus procedure, and much of the international-school circuit around them follows suit. HMUN India and most Indian conferences use North American parliamentary procedure instead, so Indian delegates moving onto the international-school circuit should expect a different flow of debate.

What is the best first conference for a student in Singapore?

PREPMUN each December is built precisely for this: it is Singapore’s largest beginner-oriented conference, with committees designed for first-time delegates. THIMUN Singapore in October is the flagship to aim for once a delegate has some committee experience through a school delegation.

Why do India’s conferences run in August rather than winter?

The Indian circuit follows the Indian academic year, which starts in the spring, so the marquee events, HMUN India, Cathedral MUN, and Doon School MUN, cluster in August. IIMUN chapter events run essentially year-round across Indian cities.

Does Australia have Model UN conferences?

Australia’s schools scene runs through UN Youth Australia rather than school-vs-school conferences. The Evatt Competition is a national Security Council simulation for teams of two, and the National Conference each July is a week-long residential program mixing MUN debate with workshops. University MUN exists separately on the collegiate circuit.

Preparing for one of these conferences?

Start with the two-week first-conference prep plan, print the first-conference checklist, and draft your paper with the position paper template. The guide to how awards actually work explains what chairs score once you get there.
